In Council news this month…..Grandmasters Chuck Norris and Bob Wall have a new website coming up which will cater to the martial arts. I was contacted some time back by fax to provide information on the Council which will be entered in the website. Moreover, at HANSHI BRUCE JUCHNIK’s event in San Diego, California held last October, we also taped several video segments for the same website as a documentary of our thoughts on the current martial arts scene…..Aside From HANSHI JUCHNIK and MYSELF, other members involved in the taping included GRANDMASTER VINCENT CABALES of SERRADA ESCRIMA; OLOHE SOLOMON KAIHEWALU of LUA; SOKE HARRIS WARREN of NISEI BUJUTSU; GRANDMASTER SAM & SENSEI KA’IMI

SHORIN RYU PIONEER, SOKE SID CAMPBELL of California reports that he just returned from two extensive trips to Mexico (Cabo San Lucas) and two to Hawaii (Maui) regarding getting future foreign and domestic sites for his LEGENDS OF THE MILLENNIUM RESTAURANTS. As mentioned in the last newsletter, there will be 30 of these martial arts theme restaurants set to open in foreign and domestic markets. DR. RICHARD HACKWORTH of the KOREAN MARTIAL ARTS INSTRUCTORS ASSOCIATION in Ocoee, Florida reports that he will be hosting the FIRST instructors licensing course for Korean martial arts given by the KUKKIWON ACADEMY outside of Korea. Grandmaster Ho Jae Kim , Dean of the KUKKIWON in conjunction with the KMAA will be doing the certifying. For more information you can contact DR. Grappling exponent and TaeKwonDo MASTER ROBERT FERGUSON has a NEW magazine coming out dedicated to operating and building martial arts and fitness businesses. The new magazine will have departments on marketing, sales, advertising, public relations, psychology and tips and techniques. SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON FOAM DIPPED PROTECTIVE GEAR……Karate pioneer, Mike Anderson e-mailed to set the record straight on protective gear….It seems that WHFSC Honorary Member, the legendary MASTER MIKE STONE was originally asked to bring the idea of foam dipped protective equipment into fruitation after a series of mishaps happened in the early years of sparring without protection. Unable to come up with a prototype of his (Stone’s) idea, Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee (the "Father of American TaeKwonDo) developed the first foam dipped protective gear…..Interestingly enough, according to Anderson, foam rubber was chosen over leather wear NOT because it was superior to the leather gear worn by boxers, BUT because Karateka wanted to develop an identity different than that of boxing…..In fact, Anderson says in tests pitting one against the other, leather came out on top consistently in terms of durability and safety. In fact he admits that he (Anderson) and others lobbied against the leather gear saying it caused "cuts" simply because they wanted to "market" the foam dipped gear to Karateka…..and now you know the "rest of the story" as relayed to me by one of Karate’s greats.

ISSHINRYU GRANDMASTER PHIL LITTLE from South Carolina was recently inducted into the Australiasian Martial Arts Hall of Fame which took place in Willow Pond Canning Vale, Western Australia…….CONGRATULATIONS PHIL.

KOSHO RYU KEMPO EXPERT, GRANDMASTER ROBERT HOE of the U.S. BLACK BELT SOCIETY in Maine is looking for a few grandmasters/ masters in the South and Mid-West areas of the United States. Those who are chosen will appear in a national calendar featuring select grandmasters and masters across the Nation. GRANDMASTER DANNY GLOVER NEW SOKE OF NEKO RYU GOSHIN JITSU…..Legendary Judoka / Ju-jitsu PROFESSOR ERNIE CATES from North Carolina is turning over the reigns of his system to his most Senior student, MASTER DANNY GLOVER come January 2001. Master Glover will serve in this position until such time when GRANDMASTER CATE’s son gains experience enough to take over the system. As for GRANDMASTER CATES, he will continue to advise and direct the Neko Ryu Goshin Jitsu as the system’s Grand Patriarch.

OLOHE SOLOMON KAIHEWALU is very concerned over the historical references of his well known family art coming from Hawaii. He is DEFINITELY VERY PROUD of his Hawaiian roots, but wants to serve notice that his family system of LUA HALAU O A KAIHEWALU originated in North Kohala Kona, the big Island of Hawaii. OLOHE SOLOMON was also one of the major contributors to GREAT GRANDMASTER TINO TUIOLESEGA’s beautiful art of LIMA LAMA.

Speaking of GRANDMASTER TINO….We hear from OLOHE that he is in poor health right now….We wish you a speedy recovery GRANDMASTER TINO…..Much love and prayers from all of us at the Council….

Nikolay Travkin, General Director for the AMERICAN ANNEX of GENERAL ALEXANDER RETUINSKIH’s RUSSIAN FEDERATION OF RUSSIAN MARTIAL ART in Georgia tells me that Russia recently launched a rocket into space bearing the logo of the R.F.R.M.A. on its hull! To see a picture of the space rocket with the RUSSIAN FEDERATION OF RUSSIAN MARTIAL ART logo painted on it, you can go to the website address of http://www.ross.ru/ru/events/ and click on the link under the picture. This is the same rocket which received worldwide press coverage for bringing an American Satellite into space!

Finally in International news….GRANDMASTER SAM KUOHA and daughter, the "fantastic" KA’IMI were involved in putting on a series of fight skits for a special tribute to stuntmen and people behind the scenes. The special tribute took place on November 4^th in Hollywood, California with SAM appearing in 5 skits and doing the choreographing while daughter, KA’IMI appeared in 4. One of the Cable Networks that was there will also be doing a feature on the Grandmaster of KARA-HO KEMPO and his daughter this month…..GRANDMASTER KUOHA also reports that the Dragon Fest festivities which he was a special guest of in November was nothing short of spectacular. Honorary WHFSC Member, MASTER JACKIE CHAN was not there as he was scheduled to be, but T.J. Storm of the popular TV series, "Hercules" was there along with other action movie stars, including WHFSC members GRANDMASTER DOUGLAS WONG, DON "THE DRAGON" WILSON, and MASTER MARK DACASCOS (participating NON-actor members of our Council included GRANDMASTER JOHN DENORA and MASTER AMIR ARDEBILY).

And now to our latest members…..We are proud to report that two of Kung-Fu’s greatest practitioners have joined us, along with one of the nation’s top Eskrima experts ……GRANDMASTER ANTHONY GOH is the first of our latest members from England. He is the INHERITOR of PIN SAN KUNE/ GUO LO WING CHUN; From Alameda, California, we have GRANDMASTER CHIU CHI LING , 8^thGENERATION INHERITOR of HUNG GAR KUNG-FU; and last but not least, one of the original pioneers of Philippine martial arts, GRANDMASTER SONNY UMPAD of VISAYAN ESKRIMA from San Francisco, California.

IN THE MEDIA THIS MONTH……BLACK BELT Magazine (January 2001 issue) features a mention of the historical signing of contracts between YOURS TRULY for the WHFSC and GENERAL ALEXANDER RETUINSKIH, of the RUSSIAN FEDERATION OF RUSSIAN MARTIAL ART (our WHFSC Representative in Russia). The contract is the first of its kind for the sponsorship of grandmasters from America to come to Russia on a yearly basis to conduct seminars. The seminars to be sponsored in part by the Russian Government…..BLACK BELT’S YEARBOOK 2000 features mentions of MASTERS DON "THE DRAGON" WILSON, RICKSON GRACIE and SHIHAN TONY ANNESI……INSIDE KUNG-FU features an article by GRANDMASTER DOUGLAS WONG with mentions of GRANDMASTER JIM ARVANITIS, MASTER JACKIE CHAN and YOURS TRULY…..NEW MAN Magazine presents an article on "Christians and the Martial Arts" with DR. KENT HARALSON…..MARTIAL ARTS PROFESSIONAL MAGAZINE spotlights MASTER DON "THE DRAGON" WILSON on the front cover; and MARTIAL ARTS & COMBAT SPORTS features a full page ad on our recent International Martial Arts Hall of Fame and Seminar Symposium held in Orlando, Florida.

Well, this concludes this particular issue of our newsletter for the year 2000…..It seems like only yesterday when we were all a little leary of the Millennium and "what" it might bring us…..and now here we are on the verge of 2001 with its new scientific breakthroughs and technological advances. As the world gets smaller by these advances we find how much we really have in common as "one people" on this great planet Earth. I am certainly very proud to call myself YOUR BROTHER in the martial arts……Until next time, please stay "aggressive" and "fair" in all you do.
